The Diary of Vera Claythorne

There are only three of us left. Me, Blore, and Lombard. I don't know what happened to Amstrong, but I believe he is dead. I can't go back to the house. I am too scared. It is risky. Lombard assured me that I would be safe in my room with the doors locked. I didn't trust him. I didn't trust anybody anymore!I couldn't go back into the house. I would starve myself. People go days without any food. I could live off air.

I heard an earthquake. Me and Lombard went to check it out. We found Blore's dead body mangled by a big piece of marble. They were out to get me next. I couldn't take it anymore. I had to protect myself. Lombard had the revolver, and I had to use it for my own protection. We spotted some clothes far away on a huge rock. We ran to see if it was Armstrong's.I finally arrived at the rock. It wasn't Armstrong's clothes, it was Armstrong smashed between two big rocks.

I managed to grab the revolver away from Lombard. I couldn't take it. I shot him! I returned to the house knowing that all the chaos was over. I tried to remember the end of the nursery rhyme. "One little Indian boy left all alone, he got married and then there were none." Is that how it went? I returned to the house knowing that Hugo would be waiting for me. I opened the door. I gasped. In the middle of the room, there was a rope with a noose, and a chair under it. This is what Hugo wanted, he wanted me to die. I suddenly remembered the last quote of the rhyme "One Little Indian boy left all alone, he went and hanged himself, and then there were none." I stood up on the chair, put my neck in the noose, and kicked the chair away.

The Diary Of Vera Claythorne

There had been a lot of tension in the house. Everyone was going insane. Every day, a person died from an unknown cause. We never knew who would be next. There was one thing we knew for sure. Every day a person died, the China Indian figures would decrease. There was another question that was brought up. Where was Mr. and Mrs. Owen? Were they on Indian Island? Did they even exist? Why were we sent here?

We found out that there was no one on the Island apart from us. Justice Wargrave believes that if U.N. Owen is not on this Island, he must be one of us. I for one think the man is insane. How could U.N. Owen be one of us? We have been living in this house for at least 4 days. If U.N. Owen was one of us, we would have caught him red handed already. I will be very careful to watch my back though, because I do not want to die. If one of us is the murderer, two of the deaths in this house have been from poison, so I believe Dr. Armstrong is the culprit. The only thing Dr. Armstrong claims to have given Mrs. Rogers was the sleeping draught, and I believe that was what caused her to die. I do not trust Dr. Armstrong at all. Lombard and I were talking, and he believes that Wargrave is the murderer because he is old and believes he is the God Almighty, the controller of life and death. I am not sure exactly who the murderer is, but until we find out, I will be very careful to watch my back.

The Diary of Vera Claythorne

I couldn't sleep. I rolled in bed thinking about Hugo. I felt like he was so close to me tonight. But was he really? I didn't know. I thought about the gramophone playing the accusations of death of every person in the house. It was frightening. I heard Cyril whining, "I want to swim out to the rock Ms. Claythorne, why can't I swim out to the rock?" I thought about Hugo's arms around me, telling me that he loved me, but was it true? I knew that if the child had been a girl, Hugo would have stayed.

I couldn't sleep. I got up and rushed out of my bed. I went to the dressing table and swallowed three aspirins. I remembered tonight. So many strange things had happened. I shivered as I remembered Anthony Marston's purple face. It was so unlikely how he died by choking on a drink. It was so weird how a China Indian figure was missing. Rogers said he swore he saw ten the other night, but today there were only nine.I glanced at the nursery rhyme hanging in my room. I read the first two lines. It said, "Ten little Indians went out to dine, one choked his little self and then there were nine. What a coincidence, just like this evening! Could the nursery rhyme be related to the death of Anthony Marston. No, it was highly unlikely! I wondered if Anthony Martson wanted to die. Did he want to commit suicide? One thing is for sure, I didn't want to die.

The Diary of Vera Claythorne

I just arrived at Indian Island. I followed Mrs. Rogers, the maid, upstairs to my room. It was beautiful. There was a big window that opened to the sea and another looking east. My luggage was brought up and had been unpacked. Mrs. Rogers asked if I had everything I needed. I said yes. I realized how strange Mrs. Rogers looked now that I actually saw her. She looked frightened, but of what? A shiver came down my back. It was like seeing a ghost. I told Mrs. Rogers that I was Mrs. Owens new secretary, and asked if she mentioned anything about me. She said that Mrs. Owen didn't mention anything. They only came two days ago, and hadn't seen her yet. I was shocked. I asked about the staff they had at Indian Island. She said there was only herself and Mr. Rogers. I frowned. I thought, there were ten people in the house, and only two people to serve them. I asked, in pity for her, if they could manage all the work. Mrs. Rogers said yes. She mentioned that she was a good cook, and Mr. Rogers was handy around the house. Mrs. Rogers left the room. She moved noiselessly across the hall. Since my arrival at Indian Island, everything was weird. The Owens were nowhere to be found, Mrs. Rogers ghostly face, and the guests. The guests were very odd. I thought about where the Owens might be. I paced around the room trying to think of an answer. I couldn't find one.

The Diary of Vera Claythorne

I was dressed and ready to go downstairs. There was a commosion in the house.I went to see what it was. No one could find Rogers.I thought maybe he was hiding, waiting for us.Rogers had got out of bed, and set the table, but he was still nowhere to be found. I noticed that there were only six China Indian figures left, which meant Rogers was dead.

They soon found Rogers in the wash house cutting wood, with his head chopped off. I bet Dr. Armstrong thought it was me who committed the murder. Oh how I hate him. I went to the yard to cool myself off. I started thinking about the next verse of the nursery rhyme. "Six little Indian boy playing with a hive,a bumblebee stung one, and then there were five." I burst out laughing. Everyone turned to look at me. I asked them if there were any bees on the Island. They were staring at me confused. I told them why I asked the question. I was still laughing. Dr. Armstrong came and slapped my face. I gasped, and told him I was all right. Why did I make a fool of myself?

Miss Brent and I cooked breakfast that morning. After the meal was over, I went to clear the plates myself because Miss Brent was feeling giddy. She was left alone. I went to go see if she was okay, but by the time I came, she was dead. I saw a bee hovering over her, and a bite mark in her neck. I warned everyone, but no one listened to me. I went to go tell the others.
